First AME Christian Education Commission

Providing opportunities through teaching and training to engage both head and heart in feeding the soul for the growth and development of the Christian character.

History

The idea of Christian Education in the AME Church is deeply rooted in the traditions of African Methodism. It began when Richard Allen, Bishop and Founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, organized the first African-American Sunday School in 1794.  At First AME Church Seattle, Christian Education is dedicated to the following:

·         Teaching the Word of God

·         Teaching and equipping the membership with tools to build a personal relationship with God and their neighbors.

·         Helping the membership to understand the Scripture and its relationship to our experience.

·         Enable succeeding generations to reclaim and sustain the character of Biblical principles.

Scripture Reference

2 Peter 1: 3-9   The Bible is the primary source for Christians to learn the major lessons of life.  To know the Bible is to know the richest resource of humanity on how to live. Our Christian Education Commission is designed to help members sand the community at large to grow in maturity in Christ. Our generation has become well versed in making money and displaying greed and technological know-how but the real problems are relational. Someone asked, "Where is life that we have lost in living, where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge and where is the knowledge we have lost in information?"   In 2 Peter 1:3-9, Peter tells Christians to grow in their knowledge and character. He said, in coming to know God, every believer escapes the corruption of sin and Christ renews and restores the image of God within.  If we possess the virtues Peter listed, we would be effective and productive. Hence, Christian Education at FAME is about, developing the Christian character, it is about encouraging Christian commitment and Christian outlook to life and it is about how we live.  It equips the whole life giving meaning and purpose to all that we do.  There is a demand for leadership with knowledge and wisdom that holds moral and spiritual values.  Won't you join us?
